Stitching Sustainability Into Fashion
Thursday, January 24th, 2:00pm until 5:00pm
This workshop will discuss and explore different stitching techniques as a way to reduce the environmental impact of fashion and fibres.

This upcoming spring we hope to hit up our local sources of delicious and nutritious wild foods that found in and around Montreal, so events will center around harvesting, processing and Eating such delights. If this interests you we’re having our next planning meeting Wednesday, January 30th at 3:30pm to continue planning for all of this greatness.

Greenhouse Sunset and Screening Night
Thursday, January 31st, 5pm-7pm
We will be showing the documentary called “Home”. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet.
It is composed mostly of beautiful and striking areal shots of the Earth and narrated by Glenn Close.
We will be offering free hot and iced tea, as well as popcorn of different flavors.
We would also like to ask for donations from $2 to $5.

We have a few projects currently underway, and we can always use an extra hand! For each of our projects we hold regular work sessions. Volunteers are encouraged to come to the work sessions and help out. Whether you’ve got years of experience under your belt or are simply curious and want to try getting your hands dirty, everyone is welcome.

The Concordia Greenhouse is currently looking to fill the position of Communications Coordinator. This position covers the internal and external communications for the greenhouse and all its projects, as well as our online and social media presence, internal signage, publicity, and community liaisons. If you or someone you know is looking to do some good green work in the community for a highly productive and socially responsible organization, we encourage you to apply! We will be accepting applications up to Friday December 14th 2012, with training in the new year. The complete job description and information on how to apply can be found here.

Position dates: Winter semester 2013 (with possibility of extending contract)
Hours: 8-10 hours/week
Pay rate: Honorarium ($500/semester)

Once a semester the greenhouse lets loose a little, and facilitates some good ol’ partying right where we grow hothouse plants from citrus fruit, to fig trees, to culinary herbs, to microgreens. This year Halloween falls on a Wednesday, so we thought we’d spook up the greenhouse for a school night Halloween haunting! We’re transforming Concordia’s rooftop oasis (that’s the greenhouse!) into a mesmerising and creepy jungle of merriment, complete with a night of music, film, dance, and (of course) candy!

The cost of entrance is on a sliding scale from $5-$10 – this is a fundraiser extravaganza, after all! Your generous donation entitles you to:

1. popcorn
2. candy
3. your chance to win a super-cool mystery urban agriculture prize
4. the lovely Fruiting Bodies vocal trio
5. Julia Feltam, cellist extraordinaire from Halifax
6. a dance party finale accompanied by screenings of fine Halloween classics, including Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and the like

We always have a real swell time. We hope you can join us for the fun and for the support! Costumes are (almost) mandatory. Come haunt the greenhouse with us this Wednesday night (October 31st) from 7:30pm-11pm at the Concordia Greenhouse, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. W. 13th floor.

A brand new local market is heading to downtown Montreal, right under our greenhouse noses, on the terrasse behind the Hall building. The market will provide a wide variety of wares, from local organic produce, to tea, to baked goods, to body products, and much more! Come out and support the local gardens and artisans, or just browse around and take in the live music. Today is the debut, but Marché Locale will be back every Tuesday until the end of November. About Will Allen and Growing Power:
Will Allen, son of a sharecropper, former professional basketball player, ex-corporate sales leader, and longtime farmer, has become recognized as among the preeminent thinkers of our time on agriculture and food policy. The founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc., a farm and community food center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Allen is widely considered the leading authority in the expanding field of urban agriculture. At Growing Power and in community food projects across the nation and around the world, Allen promotes the belief that all people, regardless of their economic circumstances, should have access to fresh, safe, affordable and nutritious foods at all times. Using methods he has developed over a lifetime, Allen trains community members to become community farmers, assuring them a secure source of good food without regard to political or economic forces. In 2008 Mr. Allen received the prestigious MacArthur “Genius grant” for his efforts to promote urban sustainable food systems.  Later, in 2010 Mr. Allen joined First Lady Michelle Obama as she launched the White House’s “Let’s Move” campaign to address issues affecting American youth and the risk of obesity and later that year was also recognized as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.  Since then, Mr. Allen has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2011 and the NCAA Theodore Roosevelt Award in 2012, which is the highest award the National Collegiate Athletic Association can bestow on a former collegiate athlete.

The Loyola Farm has launched our weekly Market Stand! Every Thursday, from 11am – 1pm, we will be selling some of our harvest at the garden. All of the food produce grown at this garden is done so by both volunteers and city farm students. All proceeds from the market stand will be put right back into the garden upkeep fund. Leftover produce from the garden will be picked up and donated to the NDG Food Depot.
