The News Everyone Has on Their Minds

Since 2010, the Concordia Greenhouse has been more than just a space filled with plants, it has been a central point for student-led and community projects, a place of learning, connection, and even healing. Over the years, we’ve welcomed many new faces to our organization, weathered many changes, including the uncertainty of the pandemic, always finding ways to adapt and grow.

After fourteen years of welcoming students to our space on the 13th floor of the Hall Building, we were temporarily relocated to the 7th floor, February 2024, while decontamination and construction was completed in the industrial room behind the greenhouse. At first, this was meant to be short-term and temporary. Unfortunately, we’ve recently been told that we will not be returning to the 13th floor until the original space can be brought up to code, and there is no firm date on when that might be.

We know this isn’t easy news. The Greenhouse has been a home for ideas, friendships, and change, and we feel the loss of our old space just as much as many of you do. But while the location has changed, the heart of the Greenhouse hasn’t. We’re still invested in our collective values, and we’re still dreaming big about what comes next.

As we prepare for the fall semester, we’re developing new workshops, planning community-led events, and reimagining the 7th floor space so it feels welcoming and inspiring for everyone who comes through. We know these changes can feel uncertain, but the best way you can support us right now is by staying engaged and helping us shape the next chapter.

Here are a few ways you can get involved this fall:

  • Join our Board of Directors. We’ll be recruiting new members soon, and we’d especially love to see motivated undergraduates step up to help guide our future. Join our mailing list to see when we are accepting applications.
  • Share your voice. Fill out our opinion survey to let us (and the university) know what matters most to you.
  • Spread the word. Sharing our updates on social media helps us reach more people and build stronger support networks.

We’re also excited to announce new possible collaborations with the Department of Political Science, the Department of Design and Computational Arts, the Department of Educational Technology — as well as continuing our collaboration with the Loyola College for Diversity and Sustainability. Together, we will be offering for-credit internship opportunities throughout the 2025–2026 academic year. These 12-week internships will focus on hands-on learning, community engagement, and student-driven ideas. If you’re interested, check with your academic advisor to see if you’re eligible for credit. And if your program isn’t listed, don’t worry, we’re still in conversation with other departments, so the list may grow.

Finally, October is Sustainability Month, and we are calling on undergraduates to lead peer-to-peer workshops on sustainability, urban agriculture, and diversity. If you have a skill, idea, or passion you would like to share with the campus community, send us a proposal! Early applicants may be eligible for an honorarium.

The Greenhouse may not be on the 13th floor — right now — but the spirit that has carried us through the last 15 years is still very much alive. With your support, we can keep building a space for connection, learning, and change, no matter where we are rooted.
