The Concordia Greenhouse Project is seeking two enthusiastic Herbal Garden Interns as part of their City Herbal Apprenticeship Program (CHAP) to join our team in supporting the care and maintenance of our perennial herb garden at the Loyola Campus. Working alongside the CHAP Coordinator and Concordia Greenhouse Project staff, the interns will gain hands-on experience in urban agriculture, sustainability practices, and community engagement. They will also co-facilitate a bi-weekly summer program for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth (13 – 18yo).
This internship offers a unique learning opportunity to connect ecological restoration with community-based education and sustainable food systems within a non-hierarchical, collaborative environment.
Responsibilities and Deliverables
- Participate in consultation sessions to learn best practices for maintaining healthy plant systems.
- Support weekly volunteer sessions, helping recruit, orient, and guide volunteers during gardening activities (e.g., pruning, composting, planting, and path maintenance).
- Assist with garden maintenance, including seedling production, watering schedules, and identifying plant health issues.
- Co-create educational and promotional materials for CHAP, including social media posts and online educational content.
- Co-facilitate four summer classes for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in the Loyola Garden
- Support administrative tasks such as helping plan events, preparing promotional materials, and reply to emails from volunteers/students
Assets and Requirements
- Is an enrolled undergraduate student for the Spring/Summer 2026 semester
(for credit through Loyola College, other departments welcome to apply) - Previous experience working with youth or community services
- Excellent Computer skills
- Strong Communication skills
- Interest in Herbal Education & Garden Maintenance
- Comfortable getting dirty
Responsibilities may evolve depending on the intern’s interests, skills, and the growing season.
Students who self-identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ and/or BIPOC will be prioritized for this role. Students not identifying as either should have a good understanding of 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC lived realities and allyship.
Employment Site: Semi-Hybrid
The City Herbal Garden is located on the Loyola Campus, as this is a hands-on labour focused internship, students will be expected to complete 75% of their work on site. Weekly one-on-one in person meetings with the CHAP Coordinator are expected.
