Hours: 10 hours/week, 18 weeks (with possibility of extension)
Pay rate: $ 15/hour
Start date: September 15th, 2014
Responsibilities and Tasks
Care of resident plant collection: house plants and the tea garden
● Ensure plants are watered appropriately
● Design and implement a fertilizing program
● Monitor health, respond to problems (pest, disease), and record observations/results
● Manage associated budgets
Tea atrium lounge and kitchen
● Stocking herbal teas
● Contribute to cleanliness of the public garden area
House plant propagation project
● Produce plants for sale
● Record keeping: inventory, observations and results
● Select and purchase new plants for propagation
● Help with the sale: pricing, advertising, compiling info for the public, coordinating volunteers
● Promote the program
● Manage the project budget
Education and experiential learning opportunities:
● Host a minimum of one open volunteer session per week during the school semester
● Facilitate a minimum of one workshop on sustainable horticulture and/or food related issues
In addition, the selected candidate will contribute to supervision of the space during open hours by holding at least one shift per week during the school semester; contribute to the clean and safe upkeep of the physical Greenhouse space; and contribute to documentation for future holders of this position.
Qualifications:
● Experience with horticulture and plant production
● Experience teaching and hosting educational opportunities
● Experience coordinating volunteers
● Knowledge of urban agriculture, food politics, the sustainable food movement and issues related to
food security
● Familiarity with the Concordia Greenhouse Project and the project’s goals an asset
● Experience growing in a greenhouse an asset
