The Concordia Greenhouse Epic Seedling Sale is Almost Here!
The Concordia Greenhouse’s 2026 Seedling Sale is coming up next friday (May 22), and a variety of local groups and community partners are preparing to offer an exciting selection of seedlings for garden enthusiasts eager to start up their gardens this season.
As every gardener knows, soil quality is one of the most important factors when starting a garden and growing delicious fruits and vegetables. Healthy soil provides plants with the nutrients they need to grow, and fertilizers help replenish those nutrients in forms that plants can absorb and use effectively.
That’s one of the reasons why producing vermicompost is one of the most rewarding parts of my work at ABCompost. Although harvesting compost can be incredibly tedious (trust me, the word “tedious” is an understatement), the vermicompost makes it worthwhile. By collecting food scraps that would otherwise end up in landfills, we are able to transform waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost that supports a more circular and sustainable food system. The food scraps we don’t eat becomes a resource that helps grow more food for our communities to enjoy!
What are the Benefits of Using Vermicompost in the Garden?
Vermicompost is one of the highest-quality natural fertilizers available for gardens. Studies have shown that vermicompost outperforms traditional compost, containing higher concentrations of plant-available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
In the soil, vermicompost improves aeration, increases water retention, and contains higher levels of microbial activity compared to other fertilizers. This increased microbial activity is important because it helps convert nutrients already present in the soil into forms that plants can more easily absorb.
For plants, vermicompost enhances germination, supports stronger root development, improves crop yields, and enriches the soil with natural plant hormones that encourage healthy growth. It also helps soil retain moisture more effectively by releasing water slowly over time, reducing the need for frequent watering. It also helps reduce gardener’s reliance on synthetic fertilizers.
Given all the benefits that worm composting can bring to your garden, it may be worth picking up some compost along with your seedlings at the sale. ABCompost will be selling freshly harvested vermicompost hand picked during the Spring 2026 season. We are selling each container for $10 (roughly 700g each), or you can get a bundle of 3 containers for $25!
We look forward to seeing you at the Seedling Sale and helping your garden grow this growing season ^_^
